Atonement

  •  I related to Briony Tallis a lot. She was self-centered and insecure. I felt that it was easy for me to understand her sentiments and the questions that she was seeking answers for, because I've been having realizations lately of how self-absorbed I've been my whole life.But the funny thing is that I hated Briony so much after what she did to Robbie. I like the way Ian McEwan could make me relate to Briony at first and then make me hate her so much later in the book. I don't think there ever was a fictional character that I hated more than Briony. Not even Dolores Umbridge!
  •  Robbie Turner! Robbie Turner had every characteristic needed to make any reader fall for him. I just can't hep but feel for him after all of the circumstances that he had been under.
  • And then of course, there's Robbie and Cecilia's tragic love story. They were the only two characters who didn't have a nice ending! Even Paul Marshall and Lola appeared happy, though they probably weren't really.
  •  Sometimes all that we can do to atone our mistakes and to change things is to turn them into literature. Even I sometimes have strong urges to just make everything that I want to happen, happen even in my own created world of words. I  still find it hard to forgive Briony after finishing the book. Everyone had their own happy endings, except Robbie and Cecilia. But I guess I just had to be reminded that tragic things happen and sometimes the merest thing that we can do to save ourselves is to create our own fantasies.

My "Not-So-Christmasy" Christmas Playlist

1. A Thousand Years- Christina Perri
   (I think it's a little hard not to like this song.)
2. Breaking Down- Florence and the Machine
   (I finally found time to listen to this, which Nikki blogged abouta few weeks ago. I think this is my life turned into a song!)
3. As a Blonde- Selena Gomez and the Scene
   ( I remember liking this song during the Pre-Bieber era of Selena's career, then I sort of forgot about it, then I just remembered it again recently.)
4. White Dress- Parachute
   (Rumor has it that this was written for Taylor Swift hahaha)
5. She's Got You High- Mumm-ra
   (Because I caught 500 Days of Summer on Star Movies a couple of times over these past few days.)
6. Skinny Love- Bon Iver
   (I discovered Birdy's version of this song last summer from an episode of The Vampire Diaries, but I only recently just heard this version.)
7. Safe and Sound- Taylor Swift ft. The Civil Wars
   ( Best Taylor Swift song yet!! And it's for the Hunger Games soundtrack! I cannot ask for anything more!)
8. Make Me Wanna Die- The Pretty Reckless
9. Summer Girl- Leighton Meester
10. Dead Hearts- Stars

I love how certain feelings and memories from certain periods of your life can stick to the songs that you repeatedly listen to for that certain time. I love how I can sometimes go back to being my past self, by surfing through the waves of memory, when I hear certain songs. Obviously these songs have nothing to do with Christmas, and they don't even have a common theme among them. All that they have in common is that they happen to come across me at this extremely boring yet lovable time of the year called Christmas break. (Yes, I'm almost always bored these days, but I love it too. I guess I'm really just more passive than active.) And I know that somehow, these songs, from now on, will have certain memories from this Christmas break glued to them.

Hotel Rwanda

“Throughout history, wars have been declared and fought in the name of man-made concepts, yet are often tragically reduced to struggles to simply preserve one’s humanity.”
The American Civil War, when traced back to its very core, simply started with plain racism. It all started because of an ideology that made some of the white people think of their own race as the naturally superior race in all mankind, and that they were born with the right to chain up and enslave their much darker counterpart. World War I, likewise, began with nations that wanted to prove themselves as the most powerful in a world engrossed in an imperial battle. The world has already witnessed many great wars and in many of these great wars, the issue of race seems to always recur.
The film Hotel Rwanda is a film about the 1993 Rwandan genocide. The genocide was rooted from not a different cause.  The reason behind it mirrors the same ideology that caused the American Civil War and the World War I. The Hutus and the Tutsis- the two ethnic groups of Rwanda, were both subjected to the same kind of desire to prove themselves as the superior group of people. A desire that came from the kind of thinking that may have had come naturally to humans yet is the same kind of thinking that is killing humanity.
The animosity between the Hutus and the Tutsis had long been harbored and strengthened by certain events that happened throughout the history of the nation of Rwanda. The genocide was not something that only begun a few years or a few months before it actually happened. It is the result of a long-existing tension between the two ethnic groups that can be traced back from earlier or as far as the year 1916 when the Belgians arrived in Rwandan soil with the aim of conquering it.
The arrival of the Belgians in Rwanda finalized a division that had long been building up between the majority Hutus and the minority Tutsis. Although the two groups are quite similar, as they share the same traditions, land, and language, the Belgians made the locals use identification cards to set apart the Hutus and the Tutsis from each other. The Tutsis, who were physically slightly thinner and taller, found themselves favored by their European colonizers as the superior group among the two. This supremacy of the Tutsis was not well-received by the Hutus and what it did was only to further the rift between the ethnic groups. The conflict resulted to several Hutu-led rebellions in 1959, the foundation of the Rwandan Patriotic Front led by the Tutsis, the assassination of Hutu Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana, and finally, the genocide.
One of the Hutu leaders in the movie, George Rutuganda, said in a radio voiceover, “When people ask me, good listeners, why do I hate all the Tutsi, I say, ‘Read our history.’ The Tutsi were collaborators for the Belgian colonists, they stole our Hutu land, they whipped us.” What the European colonizers really brought to Rwanda is an ideology that in a way mirrors the racial distinction between blacks and whites that existed in Europe and America. This ideology that was unfortunately introduced to these African groups cultivated in the minds of the Hutus a kind of hatred that only an oppressed can feel.
For so many years the tension that the Belgians have created between the Tutsis and the Hutus resulted to riots, rebellions, and fighting that never stopped. Rwanda had been a place of turbulence for so many years where there never had been peace. The Hutus and the Tutsis were two ethnic groups whose only true dividers were the labels that they had on their identification cards, but for years they had been killing each other. Countless lives were lost; all for the sake of a long-prevailing hatred brought about by a kind of thinking that never should have existed.
Every blood that is shed in war does not only mean that a human life is lost, it also signifies how, little by little, humanity is diminishing. During the war in Rwanda, every Hutu that killed a Tutsi lost a part of his or her humanity in the act of taking a human life. Humanity simply means being human. What distinguishes humans from animals is that humans are granted with all the capability in the world to be humane. If that is lost, then humanity is too.
On the other hand, every Tutsi that was killed by a Hutu had his or her humanity stolen. Not only was life lost, but it was lost because of race. A Tutsi orphan in the movie promised as she begged for her life that “she won’t be Tutsi anymore.” But no human being is given a chance to choose the race or the kind of life he or she will be born to. To be deprived of life simply because of the race or the ethnic group that one belongs to, to take from one human being the freedom to live simply because he or she was born a certain way is taking from that person his or her humanity.
Wars have been fought in the name of problems that humans have made for themselves. The aim of the Hutus was to eliminate all Tutsis and they claimed that they were halfway into achieving that. But, humanity was lost along the way and nothing good ever comes out when humanity is lost.For those people who knew this but could do nothing to stop the war, it became a struggle, not just to save lives but to also preserve humanity. Paul Rusesabagina was one of those people. Though he was at first only interested in protecting no one but his family, the worsening state of his nation forced him into becoming a refuge to his family, to his neighbors, and to everyone struggling to keep humanity.
There had been a struggle too in the part of the peace-keeping white people of the UN and the Red Cross. One of the most powerful scenes of the film was when the whites were being evacuated back to their home countries while the blacks watch them all go from across the road. The real conflict of the war might be between the Hutus and the Tutsis, but the white-skinned people cannot be cancelled out from the equation. They have struggled too in the dilemma of whether they should interfere or not, because even during those times, there was still a tiny bit of the old line that divides them from the black-skinned people. In the end, they interfered, but a fact still remains that it took them long enough before doing so.
            Throughout history, wars have been fought. Humans have fought, humans have died, humans have struggled in wars for concepts they believe to be true. And now, it has been long since the great wars of history ended, but still, humans remain to struggle. To this day, people are struggling to be allowed to be human without being judged because of their race. A war can only result to struggles because there should never have been a war in the first place.  A war can end, but humans will remain to struggle, because humans have fought for the wrong fights. Humans have fought in great wars for concepts they believe in, when they should have been fighting against those.

*This is a reflection paper I wrote for history class last semester. I'm planning to post two more reflection papers from the same class, but I don't want to post them yet since those two may make me seem like I'm preaching something that I I'm not practicing. (Basta!haha) I'm posting this to save my blog from the word vomiting that I have been doing in my past few posts. haha

A letter to the 13-year old Vochelle

Dear 13-year old Vochelle,

Do not watch too much TV. Everything that you see on TV is not what it seems. I know love teams on TV sometimes look so cute together that it just seems impossible that they're not meant for each other in real life too. But the truth is that it's highly unlikely that they'll end up with each other. So stop wasting your time!!!

Do not watch too much TV. Instead, read, write, draw, paint, sew, bake, plant a tree, cook, learn every skill there is to know.

Do not eat too much Boy Bawang and other junk foods.

I hate the songs that you like. hahaha I really do. But then, I'm not going to stop you from liking them because I guess everyone goes through a phase they'll be so embarrassed about after a few years. Who knows, maybe after a few years I'll be embarrassed about the things that I like now. So, I'm not stopping you, you'll get over things anyway. I'm not stopping you from liking High School Musical either.  I have nothing against it. Actually, I still sort of like it and every time I hear the songs or watch it now, it brings me back to being you :)

I hope you make an effort to become a better friend to the people around you. The friends that you have now are essentially good people no matter how annoying they can sometimes be. Actually, they're not annoying. I hate to break it to you, but it's not them, it's you! Don't be too self-centered!  Appreciate people more.

You have some serious social anxiety problems. Stop distorting reality and start dealing with them before you go to college.

I don't want to tell you that life isn't as perfect as you thought, or that life doesn't always magically transform into your idea of how it should be because I know you'll found out on your own sooner or later anyway.

I'm not sure if I should tell you to study harder because I know you won't no matter how many times you hear it said to you. But I really wish you would.

I hope you'd start thinking about what you want to do with your life. So you won't grow up to be eighteen years old and still not have a clear idea of what you want.

I hope you'll learn not to be too afraid. I hope you'll learn it for me.

A few of the things I'm preaching to you right now are actually still the things I preach to myself today. But I want you to do these things to set the path straight for me.

XOXO,
18-year old Vochelle

My “While-I’m-trying-to-find-joy-in-the-midst-of-this-long-wait-for Christmas” Playlist

  • Raven Fly-Girl Named T
  • Gonna Be Yours- Oh darling
  • Fight or Flight- Tiny Animals
  • Ten twenty ten- Generationals
  •  Fireball- Royal Bangs
  • Champagne Supernova- Oasis
  • The take over, the break’s over- Fall Out Boy

There are days when I just don’t feel the need to listen to music at all, but there are also days when I just get so obsessed. So, even though these songs are completely irrelevant to Christmas, these are the songs that are currently helping me to breeze through the very despicable month of November as I wait for December to come. I wonder where November got the nerve to be in the middle of two good months- October, which is sembreak month and December, which is the month of Christmas. November should be ashamed of itself! Haha.

I know I told myself before that I wouldn’t countdown to dates anymore because it’s like I’m wishing my life away. But I think Christmas deserves a countdown. So, here goes: 39 days before Christmas!!! :p

little girl, you're in the middle of the ride

Because I'm trying to try to be positive.

The Middle
 Jimmy Eat World

Hey, don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on.
Just try your best, try everything you can.
And don't you worry what they tell themselves when you're away.

It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything (everything) will be just fine, everything (everything) will be alright (alright).

Hey, you know they're all the same.
You know you're doing better on your own, so don't buy in.
Live right now.
Yeah, just be yourself.
It doesn't matter if it's good enough for someone else.

It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything (everything) will be just fine, everything (everything) will be alright (alright).
It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything (everything) will be just fine, everything (everything) will be alright (alright).

Hey, don't write yourself off yet.
It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on.
Just do your best, do everything you can.
And don't you worry what the bitter hearts are gonna say.

It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything (everything) will be just fine, everything (everything) will be alright (alright).
It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything (everything) will be just fine, everything (everything) will be alright (alright).

Lemons and Lemonade

Whenever a circumstance leads me into hearing the good old saying about making lemonade out of the lemons that life throws at you, my train of thought immediately goes from one sour idea to another. It's not quite unknown that it's always easier to weave beautiful words together and make them appear sensible than actually putting their meaning into action. Anyone can just tell someone to just make lemonade out of lemons, but that person who says things like that overlooks the fact that it's not that simple.

What if you don't know how to make lemonade?! It's not like making lemonade is a reflex that comes naturally to anyone. Or maybe, what if you run out of lemons and suddenly there's nowhere to buy from? What if all the ants in your house conspire against you and eat up your supply of sugar?!!! What if no matter how much you try, you still can't get your lemonade to taste right?! Or if you happen to get it to taste right, what if no one bothers to drink and you're left alone to drown yourself and be drunk in your little pool of sourness? Or what if your neighbor suddenly decides to make too and it just tastes so much better and you're only left to wonder about what kind of secret ingredient he or she used?!! You'd start to think that the universe intend to make things like that happen, that the universe has a tendency to ruin things for you, especially when you're trying really hard. All you can do is think that maybe you're just not made to make lemonade. You just have no place in the business of making lemonade. You were simply born with every bit of incapability in the world to make lemonade and there's nothing that can be done about it.

I've read somewhere about a particular quote that was apparently said by Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl. It's about being "sick of looking like Darth Vader next to sunshine Barbie." My kind of thinking about the lemons and the lemonade has been, sort of, making me really sad and I know that I've been looking like a gloomy Darth Vader next to the sunshine Barbies of the world. While I've been surrounded by people who seem like they're bursting balls of sunshine, I've been a ball of shadows, waiting to explode and cast darkness over the face of the earth. I've been like a rain-filled cloud and anyone who looks at the sky and sees me will surely think that it's about to be a bad, gloomy rainy day. And I'm sick of it too.

Or am I really? Sometimes I think that I'm not really sick of it because sometimes I fantasize about pulling a "Glee" season three first episode version of Quinn Fabray. Sometimes I feel like I've been secretly wanting to look sad. Sometimes I feel like I do this to myself because it's what differentiates me. Different and bitter, but still different. And sometimes it gets annoying to be too happy.

But then again, it gets really tiring to always have a picture of your own grave in your head every time something goes wrong. Nothing ever gets in the right place when it's like that and my life is clearly a solid proof testifying to that. Joke =p

Forgive me for saying that, at least I acknowledged the fact that it's my own head's fault

Sigh. Everything's confusing and I'm really tempted to quote "Awkward's" Jenna Hamilton with her "Sometimes being a teenager makes you want to die" quote, but just in case I slip in the bathroom later just like what happened to Jenna, I don't want anybody to think that I attempted suicide and that this is my suicide note.

Here We Go Again with God's Little Perfect Plans

I am currently taking a drawing class. I've always wanted to learn how to draw, so I'm actually quite happy to be taking this class. But, art is not for the frugal! The art materials that we need for class are really expensive. :( Last week, I bought water color, a brush, and one piece of a water color paper. It cost me a lot of money. I didn't want to ask my parents to send me money, because they had just sent me money the very day I bought the materials. I'm not going to drop the price of how much I had left, but no one really could have survived a week with it. So, to make sure that I'll have something to eat until the next time they send money, I used what I had left to buy a pack of crackers and slice bread. My plan was that it was all I'm going to eat for the next few days- for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I'm not planning to starve myself- just not as full as normal.

A few months ago, I found P200 inside my ever reliable body bag's inside pocket. I have no idea where it came from. One of my theories is that it's been there since high school days! :)) Anyway, what's amazing is that I didn't use it the first time I found it. I just left it there even if I already saw it. And I already forgot about it.... until this morning. I just suddenly remembered it.So, yey!!! I have money! yey!

So, I may not have asked money from my earthly parents, but my heavenly one already gave me even before I knew that I needed to ask. :)

Eat-all-you-can!!!

My family and I spent one night of the Holy Week this year at Sofitel. Aside from the super soft comforters, the clean, luxurious-looking bathroom, and the sunset view by the pool, what I really enjoyed the most was the eat-all-you-can breakfast!!! I seriously felt like all of my dreams came true that day!  There were all kinds of food! Imagine all of those foods at one place! And I can eat them all as long as my tummy can still handle! Waffles, muffins, yogurt, bread- different kinds of bread, cereal, different kinds of juices, pasta, and many, many more! they even had ratatouille!!! :))

We didn't have decent pictures!  So, sorry that the only pictures available for me to post are these pictures of me looking stupid and a little picture of the little muffins! :p

Seriously, if I would produce a patronus right now, I think this would be the happy memory that I would be using! hahaha :) Hmmm... I wonder what my patronus would be? A pig, probably! :p

I just decided to blog about this because I realized how corny my previous posts were, so here's something happy! And I was just recently reminded of this because one of my classmates in high school is going to celebrate her birthday at Sofitel on the 27th and I'm really excited to go back to this heaven!

Two Years Ago Today

It seems like the sun and the moon are trapped in an endless game of chasing after another but never at all meeting. These past two years, it’s been like as if that shifting game of the sun and the moon is getting me into nothing but the same old cycle of waking up into countless frustrations. And in between their alternating shifts, I am tossed- tossed between the days, the hours, the years until I am only left to wonder at how two years’ worth of all that tossing can both bring changes that can vary from being too little and too great. It seems that I’ll never quite know how some things make me feel like I’m already a hundred years apart from high school, while some things make it appear like it never moved a day at all.

I took the UPCAT two years ago today! :))

It may strike some as being overly sentimental that I remember the exact date so well.  It doesn’t really matter now. I didn’t even go to UP, or even if I did, it still won’t matter when the date is.  But this really isn’t about the test. It’s just that there’s something about that certain period in my life, that era when entrance tests were around the corner, which makes it a little too extra bittersweet to my memory when I look back at it now.

I remember having the “Bishi Rules”. It was this set of rules that I set up for myself as a way to force myself to study for the entrance tests. I remember that one of the rules stated that I must stop watching the teleserye “Tayong Dalawa”, which I was sort of hooked to at that time! (I was successful. I stopped watching that show!) I also really tried to wake up early every day to study, but I would always fall back into asleep whenever I do. :))

But really, I miss those times. I miss the times when all of the things I have right now were only still just day dreams. I miss the times when all I could do was wonder what college would be like. I miss not knowing. I miss being ignorant about the rough roads that college has. I really do, because then, I had a dream. I was optimistic about things. Everything was still just on my mind, and my mind could let anything happen.

It’s too different now. I’m here in Katipunan, not there in Legazpi. A lot of things happened this past year that were a little bit too disturbing and unsettling.  College has been tough. And there’s a hole, a sometimes really painful hole that I feel when I retrospect. Sometimes its wholly bitter, sometimes its wholly sweet, at other times its both. The changes were a lot more difficult to deal with last year. Right now, I’d like to think I can pretty much deal with the differences and the surprises a little better. I can take them in, live the differences and know that the only thing I can do now is to wonder at them.

But at the same time, some things haven’t changed at all. Despite everything, I could sit down and think through things and realize that deep down inside my core is the same little girl who never could have thought that this and that could happen to her. That girl doesn’t know anything.  We both don’t know anything about everything. We both don’t know anything about how to make it through this life. But sometimes, it’s a comfort to know that I’m still intact with that girl who, two years ago, took the UPCAT. Despite the frustrations, despite sometimes desperately missing her home, she is still sane and she’s still here with me.

Three things on my mind

It’s always depressing to think about my time management skills. I do try to be disciplined and extremely organized, but it’s just so hard. I have a planner, and I make to-do lists but I never get to follow them. To think that my schedule is actually pretty tame compared to some people. I’m not even active in orgs and other extracurricular activities. I think that gives me a responsibility to be at least really be focused on my academics, but no, I’m not focused on that one too. Then, you’d think maybe at least I could keep the house clean, but no, as of my writing, I both have a huge pile of dishes and underwear waiting for me to wash them.

Last week had been the kindest week I’ve had ever since I started college. I had almost the whole week off: we didn’t have classes Monday afternoon because of PNOY’s SONA; classes were suspended Tuesday afternoon because of the weather; classes were suspended for the whole day of Wednesday; my Friday classes are only from 9:30-11:30 in the morning, but a mass was held last Friday at those times so I was free that day too.

So, in other words, I only had one regular, full school day- which was Thursday. But things weren’t bad that day too. I was supposed to have a “Supertest” for my Spanish class that day, but then, it got postponed! And I don’t have classes today (Monday) too, in celebration of the Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola. I feel really guilty for having this much free time, especially because I don’t ever do anything worth doing!

But I really couldn’t be more thankful. I don’t think it’s possible for me to have another week like that ever again. If I do, then I think my parents should start demanding for a tuition refund!

TUITION!! To think about my tuition is always heavy and pressuring and really scary. I don’t know what to do to convince myself that I deserve to be spent on like this. And, to think about how I’m spending most of my time- how I always choose doing senseless stuff than opening my books, I don’t think I’ll ever come to a point where I’ll be convinced.

I didn't write this blog entry to conclude that from now on I’ll finally be organized. I’ve come to a point in my life where I’m just tired of giving myself pep talks, and expecting myself to finally do the things I’ve always wanted to do. But I guess I’m going to end this by saying that I’ll continue trying until I figure out how things work out for me.

~~~
Another thing that’s really bothering me lately is this class I’m currently taking and how I wish I didn’t take it. I’ve been submitting home works for this class that I’m absolutely NOT happy about and I have to go through consultations about those works with my teacher pointing out the reasons why I shouldn’t be happy about them. I wish I could tell him that I know they’re trash and let’s just not discuss them.
This particular subject is starting to seem like math to me. I think it would actually feel better if I had taken a math class. At least I wouldn’t be hurt much to receive bad marks because I’ve always known how math and I are never meant for each other. I really wish I didn’t take this class. I made a wrong decision. I should have known I’ll never be able to find my voice in a class where there are 16 other voices wanting to be heard. I'll only just end up comparing myself to others, which I don't think is healthy for me.
But then again, maybe it’s only right for me to take have taken this class. Not because I’m happy about it, but because it made me realize a few things. Now that I know I’ll never be happy about taking this class, I wouldn’t forever pine about what could have been. It hurts that it didn’t turn out the way I wanted. It hurts that I’ve come to a point like this. It’s embarrassing. But at least now, I know where I stand. And maybe I can move on and not force myself into something that doesn't want me. I still don’t know how I’ll get myself out of the mess that I’ve made for myself, though, but hopefully I can because I really can't take the pain anymore. hahaha :)
~~~

“Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.”
-Ecclesiastes 9:10

Now, if only I could find what my hands should do…

I want to find that thing that I’ll never be tired of doing- something I’ll apply Malcolm Gladwell’s “10, 000 hour rule” to, something I’m really passionate about and I’m really good at.

I’m thinking the reason why I still haven’t found it is because I want it for the wrong reasons. The reason why I’ve always wanted to be good at something is because I want to glorify myself. I want to have a redeeming quality because I’m too shy and quiet and I don’t know how to talk to people. I want to be good at something to make up for that. But maybe I should want to be good at something for some far more valuable reasons than just to make myself a little more likeable.

Likewise, I shouldn’t just want to get higher grades just so my mother would stop talking about some other people who, according to her, are “doing good” at some other school. I don’t know why I should want to get higher grades, but maybe it shouldn’t be because I want to prove myself better than somebody else. One thing I’ve realized about wanting to prove yourself is that it’s a never-ending cycle. You’d always have to prove yourself more after being able to prove yourself once.

The poem “Desiderata” was printed on my planner’s cover last year and maybe I should remind myself now about certain lines in it:

“If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself”
